Delicious Egg Yolk on Toast For Babies
A quick and easy breakfast you can make for baby-led weaning is mashed egg yolk on toast for babies.
It only requires 2 key ingredients. It was one of my go-to breakfast ideas when my kids first started baby-led weaning years ago.
They’re now 1 and 3 years old so they’ve transitioned to more advanced meals.
I still make them boiled eggs with toast regularly, even though I don’t mash the egg yolk on toast anymore.

Important Recipe Notes on BLW Egg Yolk on Toast
Egg is a common allergen
Before you feed eggs to your baby, make sure you know the signs of an egg allergy in children.
Egg yolk tends to be the most allergenic because it contains more protein than egg whites.
Knowing the signs of an allergy will help you to be prepared if one does occur.

Decide how you want to cook your eggs
To make this recipe, you can choose to cook your eggs hard-boiled or soft-boiled.
How to make hard-boiled eggs
Put about 3 cups of water in a small saucepan. Add the egg and cover the pot. Cook it on medium heat for about 8-10 minutes.
Pro-tip: wait until the water starts boiling in the pot to set the timer for the eggs. This will give you a much better result.

How to make half-boiled eggs
Put about 3 cups of water in a small saucepan.
Wait until the water starts to fully boil then drop in the eggs and cover the pot. Cook the egg for 4 minutes and immediately remove it from the pot.
Place it in a bowl of cold water to cool down. Doing so will allow you to peel it easily.
Pro-tip: Place the egg in a large cooking spoon and slowly release it into the bottom of the boiling water.
This will prevent you from burning your hands, and cracking the egg when you drop it into the pot. I make perfect soft-boiled eggs this way.
Why Eggs Are Good For Babies and Toddlers
Eggs are a great source of protein for babies and toddlers.
They contain omega-3 fatty acids. They also contain vitamins A, D, E, and B12. These are all essential nutrients that children need to grow well (source).
Besides these important benefits, eggs are very filling so they make your baby feel fuller. This will reduce the need to snack throughout the day.

Tips for Picky Eaters
Don’t pressure
Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.
It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.
Make it into a game
Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.
A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.
Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.

A slice of bread – I prefer to use hearty bread like whole wheat, rye or pumpernickel. They have more nutrients than white bread.
An egg – I used a medium egg here. You can choose to hard boil or soft boil the egg yolk.
