Important Recipe Notes on Baby-led Weaning Avocado Tuna Sandwich

Ingredient Substitution for Tuna Avocado Sandwich

If you don’t want to use avocado for this recipe, then you can use mayo. One of the reasons for including mayo in this recipe is to create a creamy texture.

You can achieve that same creamy texture using mayo.

Just be aware that mayo will not taste as good as avocado if you do use it in this recipe.

Shred the carrots for the best results

To make the perfect avocado and tuna salad, you’ll need to shred the carrots very fine so that it’s easy for your kids to eat.

I recommend using a cheese grater for this because food processors don’t do a very good job. They will leave chunky bits of carrots in the mix.

Don’t omit the celery

There’s something about celery that gives an extra layer of flavor to the tuna sandwich. So I wouldn’t recommend skipping this step.

Don’t skip the lemon

Lemon helps make the tuna taste less fishy. You can use lemon juice or fresh lemons if you prefer.

Ingredients For BLW Avocado Tuna Sandwich

Avocado – Make sure you use ripe avocados to ensure that the tuna sandwich comes out well.

Celery – Just a little celery stalk is all you need to boost the flavor of this tuna salad mixture.

CarrotGrate the carrots to ensure they mix well together with the other ingredients.

Lemon juice – a little bit is all you need to remove the fishy smell from the tuna.

Bread – I like using hard bread like whole wheat, rye, or pumpernickel because they taste better.

Tuna –  Drain the liquid from the can of tuna.

Why Tuna Is Good For Babies and Toddlers

Tuna is a great meal to feed babies and toddlers because it contains a lot of nutrients that they need to grow.

Omega 3, a healthy fat that helps in brain development is plentiful in canned tuna. Tuna also contains lots of vitamin D, iron, potassium, and selenium which helps in overall development (Source).

What To Serve With Tuna Salad For Baby & Toddlers

Serve with some healthy chips for toddlers

Chips go well with sandwiches. I wouldn’t recommend serving them to a baby, but toddlers may enjoy some chips on the side.

To make it healthier, serve healthy chips like these snap pea “chips”. I serve them all the time to my children to include some hidden veggies in their diet.

How To Cut Tuna Sandwich For Baby-led Weaning

6-9 Months old

For babies ages 6 months to 9 months, serve them this tuna sandwich deconstructed. I like to use sectioned plates for this.

Serve the tuna-avocado mixture in one section and the bread chunks in another. This way your baby will be able to scoop the avocado tuna sandwich easily.

9-12 months old

Babies ages 9 through 12 months old can be served avocado tuna sandwiches in long strips of small chunks.

This will make it easier for them to pick it up. Kids this old should have developed their pincer grasp. So they’ll be able to pick up small chunks of food.

12- 24 months and older

You can serve toddlers this tuna sandwich cut in half. You can also serve it in whatever way your toddler prefers to eat it.

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.
