Why I Love Making Baked Apple Slices For Babies and Toddlers

I love serving baked apple slices to my baby because it’s an easy snack that requires no special ingredients and takes little time to make.

You have the choice to add spices like vanilla and cinnamon to it but those aren’t necessary.

Apples are naturally sweet so baking them makes them even sweeter.

Safety Tip For Making Baked Apple Slices For Baby

Slice the apples as thin as you can get them

When babies are eating apples in their early days of weaning, it’s important that we cut them appropriately for their age.

Apples are a high choking hazard but when cooked and cut appropriately, it’s safe to feed a baby.

Cutting baked apples for babies 6-9 months old

For babies between 6-9 months of age, you should serve them cooked or baked apples peeled and cut in half.

Make sure that they’re soft enough to pierce with a fork before you serve them to your baby whether boiling or baking.

Cutting baked apples for babies 9-12 months

For babies between 9 and 12 months, you should cut the apples into thin long strips, before baking them until they’re soft. Cutting apples into thin strips will encourage your baby to bite and practice chewing.

Serving baked apples to 12 – 18 months toddlers

Toddlers between 12 – 18 months can continue to be served cooked or baked apple slices cut into thin strips.

When they’re ready for raw apples, you can offer them whole peeled raw apples for them to bite and chew on.

Cutting apples for babies 18-24 months old

You can make baked apple slices for a baby or toddler between 12-18 months.

To do so, cut the apples into quarters before baking them.

Always make sure that they’re soft enough to be pierced with a fork before giving them to your baby.

Apple – you can use any type of apple you prefer but I suggest you pick the sweeter variety. I personally love red delicious and honey crisp apples.

Spices – You can sprinkle some spices on top of the apples after baking if you want. Anything from cinnamon, allspice, and cardamom.

What To Serve With Baked Apple Slices For Baby

Serve with peanut butter

If you haven’t tried baked apple slices with peanut butter then you’re missing out.

That has been my family’s go-to snack for years.

For babies and toddlers below 3 years old, you should use smooth peanut butter to prevent the chunks from getting stuck in their throats.

If your baby is just beginning baby-led weaning, you can thin the peanut butter with some breast milk or cow milk.

Baked Apples For Baby Storage Tips

Can I refrigerate baked apple slices for baby-led weaning?

You can refrigerate baby-led weaning baked apple slices.

The apples will last for a few days in the fridge if you put them in a ziplock bag or Pyrex container.

Reheating Baked Apple Slices For Baby

In the oven

You can reheat cold apple slices in the oven. To do so, set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat the apple slices for about 5-10 minutes.

Anything more than that will dry out the apple slices or burn them.

They may not be fully warmed but it will be better than being cold.

In the microwave

You could also reheat them in the microwave for 1-2 minutes on 70% power.

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.
