Why I Love Avocado Cheese Sandwich For Toddlers

Easy to Make

This avocado sandwich with cheese is very easy to make. It’s made just like a grilled cheese but tastes ten times better.

Even my toddler who only eats avocados prepared a certain way, loved this recipe.

Tastes delicious

What’s better than melted cheese and avocado inside a toasted rye bread?

It’s so good that you will want a second and third serving!

Great for a picnic or lunch meal

If you’re looking for a simple picnic food or lunch meal that doesn’t take too long to make, then this recipe is for you.

Important Recipe Notes on BLW Avocado Sandwich

Use any cheese you like

Cheese is the most important recipe in this avocado sandwich. I prefer to use Mexican cheese or sharp cheddar cheese.

However, from personal experience, I find that sharp cheddar makes the sandwich taste much better than any other kind.

Use hardy bread for a better texture

While you can use white bread to make this sandwich, I’d strongly recommend using hardy varieties of bread instead.

Breads like whole grain, rye bread, pumpernickel, or sourdough will produce much better results.

Allergy Considerations for Toddler-friendly Avocado Sandwich

Some kids may have dairy allergies

One of the main ingredients in this avocado sandwich is cheese.

So you need to be mindful of dairy sensitivity or allergies. It’s a good idea to learn about some signs of dairy allergies or sensitivity so you know what to watch for.

Ingredients For Grilled Cheese Avocado Sandwich

Breadhardy bread such as rye, pumpernickel, whole wheat etc is preferred. These won’t fall apart or become soggy easily.

Avocado – make sure you’re using ripe avocado because it won’t melt into the cheese as good if it’s not ripe.

Cheese – I love sharp cheddar, Parmesan, or Mexican cheese blends for making grilled cheese.

Butter – the butter is what we grill the sandwich in. You can use canola oil if you don’t want butter.

What To Serve With Avocado Sandwich Grilled Cheese

Serve with a protein on the side

Proteins like meatballs, breaded chicken, chicken nuggets, or tofu nuggets all make a great side meal to pair with this recipe.

Serve with some vegetables

Simple vegetables like carrot sticks (cooked for a baby), and steamed broccoli would be great to serve with this grilled avocado sandwich.

How To Cut Grilled Avocado Sandwich For Baby-led Weaning

6-9 Months old

This grilled avocado sandwich can be cut into small chunks for babies between 6-9 months old.

Make sure that the bread isn’t grilled too hard so that your baby can gum it easily.

You can also choose to serve the sandwich in long strips for them to grab and eat.

9-12 months old

Kids between 9 and 12 months can have avocado sandwiches cut into small chunks as well. They should be able to feed themselves easily at this age.

12- 24 months and older

Between 12 – 24 months old, toddlers can practice eating sandwiches cut into quarters or half.

It takes a while to learn to hold a sandwich without it falling apart, so help them if they get frustrated.

Reheating Toddler-Friendly Grilled Avocado Sandwich

In the oven

While an avocado grilled cheese sandwich is better eaten straight away, you can reheat it in the oven.

Make sure you heat them on low heat until the sandwich is hot all the way through.

In the microwave

The easiest way to reheat this sandwich is in the microwave. Reheat on high power for 1-2 minutes flipping halfway through.

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.
