I know I’m biased, but I have to say that my strawberry oatmeal recipe for babies and toddlers is the best out there. 

This oatmeal recipe for baby-led weaning is smooth and silky to taste, easy for baby to digest, and loaded with nutrients. 

I make it at least once a week and every time, they eat it all before I’ve even had a taste. Today I’m going to share with you how I make this easy strawberry oatmeal for babies.

Why I Love Strawberry Oatmeal for Babies and Toddlers

Simple Recipe to Make

My strawberry oatmeal recipe only takes 10 minutes to make. The best part is that it contains no fancy ingredients that you don’t already have in your fridge.

Packed With Nutrients 

This strawberry oatmeal breakfast for babies has a ton of nutrients that help boost the immune system of toddlers. It contains lots of vitamin C and antioxidants in the strawberry. 

Rolled oats are also a great source of nutrients like Manganese, B vitamins, protein, and fiber. The fiber it contains will help with digestion and regularity. (Source).

Helps use up old strawberries 

Making strawberry oatmeal for your baby is a great way to use up old strawberries before they go bad. 

I always do this with old or mushy strawberries when I don’t have time to make jam with them.

Important Recipe Notes on BLW Strawberry Oatmeal 

You can use frozen strawberries 

Frozen strawberries would work with this recipe if you don’t have fresh ones on hand. If using frozen strawberries, remember to defrost them first in a bowl. 

 Also, don’t throw out the liquid that drains out after being defrosted. There’s a lot of nutrients and sweetness in the liquid that seeps out of the frozen strawberry. 

So I like adding it to the pot to cook the oatmeal. 

You Can Make This Strawberry Oatmeal With No Sugar

If you don’t want to use sugar for your strawberry oatmeal, there are many alternatives. You can substitute brown sugar for maple syrup. 

Maple syrup works great to sweeten oatmeal without requiring any brown sugar. 

You could also use honey (only if your baby is older than 12 months of age). Honey is not recommended for children less than 1 year old.

Allergy Considerations for Strawberry Oatmeal 

This recipe contains dairy (Use dairy-free alternatives)

Dairy is a common cause of allergic reactions in babies and toddlers. So monitor your child for any reactions if this is your first time feeding this recipe to them.

You can use dairy-free alternatives like oat milk, almond milk, etc. if your baby has a milk intolerance or allergy.

Rolled oats are naturally gluten-free, which means they’re great for babies and toddlers on a gluten-free diet.

Recipe Variation for Baby-led Weaning Strawberry Oatmeal

Oven-Baked Strawberry Oatmeal

If you don’t have time to make the strawberry oatmeal in the morning, you can use the oven to quicken the job.

Just mix all the ingredients as usual, and pour them into a baking pan lined with parchment paper. Then bake the oatmeal at 350 degrees until it stiffens and solidifies. 

To help the oatmeal stick together better, you must use egg, peanut butter, or another egg alternative.

Strawberry Overnight Oats

Another recipe variation for strawberry oatmeal is making it as overnight oats. To do this, you would follow the recipe as usual, and fill a bowl with the oatmeal.

You leave it covered in the fridge overnight and eat it the next day. No cooking is required!

Strawberry Puree over Oatmeal

If your baby is still very young (around 6 months old just starting solids), then you can use this method. 

Pureeing the strawberry beforehand and mixing it into the oatmeal may make it easier for babies to eat when they’re just starting solids.

Strawberry Yogurt Oatmeal

Add some whole-fat Greek yogurt to the oatmeal to give your baby some good bacteria to help build their gut health.

Strawberry Oatmeal with Chia Seeds

This is another great way to enhance your strawberry oatmeal to make it more nutritious for your baby or toddler.

 Ingredients For Baby-led Weaning Strawberry Oatmeal

Rolled oats – I prefer using rolled oats because they’re thicker in consistency. You could use quick oats if you prefer. 

Strawberry – frozen or fresh ones would work.  

Sweetener – this is my preferred sweetener. You could also use maple syrup, white sugar, or honey (for kids over 12 months only). 

Cinnamon and vanilla – give the oatmeal a little flavor.  

Milk – any kind of milk would work. My family and I use lactaid milk because we’re lactose intolerant.

What To Serve With Strawberry Oatmeal For Babies and Toddlers

Serve with a side of protein 

Since oatmeal mostly contains carbohydrates, it would be great to serve a protein alongside it. 

Some easy proteins you could serve with it are bacon (for toddlers only), sausage, or chopped ham.

How To Serve Strawberry Oatmeal For Baby-led Weaning

Strawberry oatmeal for 6-8 Months old

Babies between 6 and 9 months old should be allowed to eat strawberry oatmeal with their hands, from a bowl. Doing so will allow them to self-feed with confidence. 

Strawberry oatmeal 9-12 months old

Babies between 9 and 12 months can be introduced to utensils for self-feeding. At this age, they will require you to pre-load the oatmeal into a spoon, and then hand it to them for self-feeding.

Strawberry oatmeal 12- 24 months and older

Toddlers older than 12 months can start practicing scooping food by themselves. If they get frustrated, you can take over and preload their spoons for a while, and then let them try again.

Cooking Directions For BLW-friendly Strawberry Oatmeal

  • In a small saucepan, add the oatmeal, sugar, strawberry, and all the other ingredients.
  • Set your heat to medium-low and cover the saucepan.
  • Allow the milk to come to a boil slowly, then stir the mixture to prevent burning. Add more milk if necessary.
  • Reduce the heat to low and allow to cook for about 5 more minutes or until the oatmeal becomes slimy in texture.
  • Remove from the heat and serve.

Storage Tips For Strawberry Oatmeal  

Can I refrigerate this strawberry oatmeal?

 This oatmeal is better when eaten fresh. Although you could refrigerate it for a day in the fridge.  

To keep it refrigerated, store it in a Pyrex container to maintain its freshness. 

You may have to add more milk to it when you need to reheat it.

Reheating Strawberry Oatmeal For Baby 

The best way to reheat cold strawberry oatmeal is in the microwave. If your oatmeal is dry, then add more milk before reheating. This will prevent it from getting clumpy when reheated.

Can I make overnight strawberry oatmeal for Babies? 

You can make this strawberry and oat breakfast for baby-led weaning overnight to eat the next morning. Everything would remain the same if doing overnight oats. 

The only difference is that you will not be cooking the overnight oats. The milk will soften the oats after being absorbed.
