Why I Love Making Spinach Omelets for Babies and Toddlers

Spinach Omelets Are Easy to Make

These omelets take me less than 5 minutes to make every morning.

You can even prep the ingredients overnight to cut down on the prep time.

I used to do that when I was in grad school. I’d prep a bowl of spinach omelet the night before by whipping together eggs and chopped spinach.

Now that I’m a mom, I do the same for my kids to make breakfast easier in the mornings.

You can add a variety of other ingredients to the omelet

You can add more than just spinach to this omelet for your baby.

Some other things I’ve added in the past are mushrooms, bell peppers, and tomatoes.

Important Recipe Notes on BLW Spinach Omelette

Chop the Spinach into small bits for little ones

If you’re making this omelette for babies just starting their BLW journey, you should chop the spinach very small.

This will allow your baby to eat the omelet more easily.

I remember my oldest toddler refusing to eat spinach omelets because the spinach would get caught in his teeth.

He only began eating them when I started cutting them into small pieces.

You can make this without cheese

I usually make my omelets without cheese because I’m lactose intolerant.

Since I cook in large batches, I don’t include cheese in the omelets I make for the kids either.

You’ll need a nonstick pan or cast iron to make this omelet without cheese.

They work best to cook to help you flip the eggs and bend them into an omelet shape without breaking them.

If using cheese, any kind will work

You can use any kind of cheese for this omelet recipe.

My favorite cheese to use for omelets is this Mexican cheese blend or cheddar cheese.

They add to the flavor of the meal and make it more tasty.

Allergy Considerations For Spinach Omelet

Eggs are a common allergen

Eggs are a common allergen in babies and toddlers.

So if this is your first time giving your kids an egg omelet, you should watch out for signs of an egg allergy.

Make sure you know CPR so that you can intervene if they do develop an allergic reaction.

Cheese is a common allergen

Cheese, which is a dairy product, is another common allergen in babies and toddlers.

If your baby has a sensitivity to cheese then consider using a vegan alternative like Vegan cheddar cheese.

Always watch out for signs of dairy allergies and sensitivity after giving them to your kids.

Ingredients For Baby-led Weaning Spinach Omelette

Eggs – any size of eggs will work

Spinach – chop them very fine for small babies

Cheese – I used Mexican cheese blend but I’ve also used cheddar in the past. Any type will work.

Spices – those are optional but I love using parsley flakes, black pepper, or paprika.

  • Add the chopped spinach and cheese to one-half of the eggs.

Why Eggs Are Good For Babies and Toddlers

Eggs are a great source of protein for babies and toddlers. They contain choline and omega-3 fatty acids, which promote brain development. They’re also high in vitamin B vitamins and vitamin D (source).

What To Serve With Spinach Omelet For Baby & Toddlers

Serve with toast and Jam

Toast is one of my favorite things to serve with spinach egg omelets.

You can either put a spread of jam on the toast or peanut butter. Peanut butter on toast will help your baby feel full for longer periods.

Serve with a side of fruits

My kids love it when I serve fruits with their meals. That’s why I try to include it in almost everything I feed them.

Fruits like strawberries, bananas, and blueberries go very well with their spinach omelet.

How To Cut Spinach Omelet For Baby-led Weaning

6-9 Months old

Spinach omelets should be cut into strips for babies between 6 and 9 months old.

This will allow them to grab them easily to self-feed.

Babies this young haven’t developed their pincer grasp so serving tiny pieces of food will be difficult for them to pick up.

9-12 months old

Spinach omelets can be cut into smaller pieces for babies between 9-12 months.

By this age, they would have developed their pincer grasp to pick up small pieces of food.

12- 24 months and older

Toddlers between 12-24 months should be fed spinach omelets in either strips or chunks.

Follow their lead to determine how they like to be served their food.

Baby-friendly Spinach Omelette Storage Tips

Can I refrigerate the Spinach Omelette?

You can refrigerate this baby-friendly spinach omelet for a few hours, but it tastes best if you eat it immediately.

Can I freeze Spinach Omelet for baby-led weaning?

I wouldn’t recommend freezing omelets because they won’t reheat well.

Reheating BLW Spinach omelet

If you need to reheat cold omelets, you can heat them in a pan for a few minutes until the omelet is evenly hot.

You can also reheat them in the microwave for a few minutes.

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.
