Easy Apple Banana Pancakes For Baby + No Egg Option

Apple banana pancakes for baby are fluffy and tasty without being too sweet. 

They’re made with simple ingredients and have no added sugar in it. 

The natural sweetness of the fruit is what gives them their delicious taste. This makes it ideal for a baby just starting solids

The best part is that you can make them with or without eggs if your baby has an egg allergy.

Why I Love Apple Banana Pancakes For Baby-led Weaning

I love making apple banana pancakes for baby-led weaning because you don’t need to add sugar to make it sweeter.

You can add a little jam on top if your baby prefers sweeter pancakes. Other than that, there’s no added sugar in the recipe itself.

The shredded apple and banana is what gives this pancake its delicious flavor.

Important Recipe Notes on BLW Apple Banana Pancakes

You can make it sweeter with maple syrup 

Someone once commented on one of my recipes saying that it wasn’t sweet enough for their baby.

So now I make it a point to inform everyone that they can make the recipe sweeter if they want.

I prefer to keep my recipes less sweet because I don’t want to feed my babies too much sugar.

Babies doing BLW shouldn’t have sugar until 1 year of age. After that, sugar intake should still be limited for toddlers.

But if you want your pancake sweater, all you have to do is add 1 or more tablespoons of maple syrup or brown sugar.

You can make it without eggs

Eggs are a common allergen in babies and toddlers. So if you want to make this recipe without eggs, just follow my table below.

3 tbsp peanut butter1 egg
1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water1 egg (whisk until gelatinous)
1/2 mashed banana1 egg
1 tbsp mashed sweet potato1 egg
1/4 cup applesauce1 egg
1 tbsp chia seed + 3 tbsp water1 egg (stir & rest it for 15-30 min)
1 tbsp soy protein + 3 tbsp water1 egg (mix & use immediately)

You can use premade pancake mix 

If you prefer to use premade pancake mixes, then I suggest you use the “just add water” kind.

This way, you won’t have to use baking soda and egg in the recipe. 

You can use the premade pancake mix to replace the flour, as you follow the other steps of the recipe. 

My preferred premade pancake mix is Kodiak Protein Pancake Mix. It’s packed with protein and all you need to do is just add water.

Recipe Tips and Tricks for Baby Apple Banana Pancakes 

Shred the apples so they cook better

The first time I made this recipe, I chopped the apples. What resulted was a pancake that was cooked on the outside and raw on the inside.

The apples didn’t cook at all. 

To make sure that your apples cook evenly, it’s a good idea to shred the apples rather than chop them. 

I use a cheese grater to help me with this. 

Shredded apples are also easier for children younger than 9 months old to eat. 

Cook the pancakes on medium-low heat 

Another thing I’ve learned over the years of making this recipe is that low heat works much better for raw fruit pancakes.

With medium-low heat, your pancakes will get the chance to cook through from the outside in. 

Don’t make the batter too thick or too runny

Take it from someone who has made this mistake many times before. Making your pancake batter too thick or too runny will result in uneven cooking.

Ingredients For BLW Banana Apple Pancakes 

Flour – you have the choice of using whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour or a mix of both. 

I’ve used all three options in the past and they came out great. 

If using whole wheat, you may have to add a little more water or milk because whole wheat flour absorbs more water. 

Fruits – the main fruit in this pancake are bananas and apples. You can choose to add others if you prefer. 

Egg – you can use real eggs or an egg substitute for this recipe. See the table above for egg substitutes. 

Water or milk – I use either water or milk to loosen the pancake batter. Milk makes the pancakes more fluffier than water. 

Cooking Directions For Baby Apple Banana Pancakes 

  • In a separate bowl, mix the dry ingredients (Combine the flour, and baking soda, together. Mix thoroughly and let stand for 2 minutes)
  • Combine wet ingredients in a separate bowl (combine the banana, apples, egg, and vanilla). Mix with a fork until just combined. 
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined. Don’t overmix. 
  • Add the milk or water to loosen up the batter to your desired consistency. Don’t overmix. 
  • Grease a pan over medium-low heat. Scoop some pancake batter on the pan. Let it cook until the edge is a little brown or bubbles stop forming.
  • Flip and cook the reverse side. Remove from the heat and serve

What To Serve With Apple Banana Pancakes For Baby

Serve with some syrup or jam

If your baby or toddler prefers to eat their pancakes with something sweet, you can serve it with syrup or jam. 

Babies younger than 12 months old should not have any added sugar. You can serve them their pancakes with some mashed fruit on top or give them plain pancakes. 

Serve with a protein 

When I make pancakes for my baby or my toddler, I try to add some protein on the side. 

Pancakes are just carbs with the addition of some fruits. So it’s good to make the meal more balanced by adding some proteins.

You can serve them with chickpeas, sweet peas, shredded chicken on sausage if your baby is older.

How To Cut Apple Banana Pancakes For Baby-led Weaning

6-9 Months old

For children this young, cut the pancakes into long strips. The strips should be the size of two adult fingers pressed together.

9-12 months old

For kids between 9-12 months old, you can cut the pancakes into smaller chunks. They will be able to pick them up with their hands to eat.

12- 24 months and older

For toddlers between 12 – 24 months old, try offering a preloaded fork for them to eat with. You can cut the pancakes into small chunks.  

Storage Tips For Baby Apple Banana Pancakes

Can I refrigerate apple banana pancakes for a baby?

You can refrigerate apple banana pancakes for your baby for a few hours. If left longer, it will lose its flavor and become soggy.

It’s best to eat pancakes when they’re fresh. 

Can I freeze apple banana pancakes for baby-led weaning?

You can freeze these BLW apple banana pancakes for as long as you need.

To freeze, place some parchment paper in between each pancake and stack them together. 

Put them in a Pyrex container or a ziplock bag with the air pressed out. 

Reheating BLW Apple Banana Pancakes 

In the oven

You can reheat these pancakes in the oven. Set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Heat the pancakes until the center is hot. It may help to cut the pancakes in half so they heat up quickly.

In the microwave 

The best way to reheat these pancakes is in the microwave. To do so, place one or two in a microwave-safe plate. 

Heat for 1-3 minutes or until the center is hot. 

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying. 

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating. 

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.

These simple apple banana pancakes for baby-led weaning are perfect for morning breakfast. They take less than 30 minutes to make and contain lots of fruits that kids of all ages will love.
