Why I Love This Pumpkin Pancake for Baby-led Weaning
Pumpkin is one of my favorite fall vegetables. It’s so healthy for babies, and It goes with almost everything.
You can roast it to eat on its own or add it to pancakes, muffins, smoothies, etc.
This pumpkin pancake for babies is a great way to introduce them to the vegetable this fall.
If you have leftover pumpkins from Halloween or just happened to get a can of puréed pumpkin at the store, you can make this pumpkin pancake for breakfast.
Another one of my favorite pumpkin recipes for the fall is this cheesy pumpkin pasta for babies. My baby couldn’t get enough. He loved it both hot and cold.

You can use canned pumpkin
You can use canned pumpkin to make this pumpkin pasta for your baby.
You don’t have to go through the effort of making pumpkin purée from scratch. The canned pumpkin will do just fine.
Just make sure you buy 100% canned pumpkins like this one on Amazon. Not the pumpkin pie filling.
You can use ready-made pancake mix
For this recipe, I used pancake mix instead of making my pancake batter from scratch.
I usually make the pancake batter from scratch, but I use pancake mix on busy mornings when my kids are too hungry to wait.
For this recipe, I used Kodiak Cakes protein pancake mix. It’s made with whole grains and has lots of protein.
You can make them with no eggs
If you have a special diet or are allergic to eggs, then see the table included for various egg substitutes.
Some pancake mixes use eggs as a key ingredient. So if your diet doesn’t allow for eggs, then I suggest you make your pancake mix from scratch.
You can add fruits to the pancake batter
If you want to make your pumpkin pancake sweet, then add any fruit of your choice to the batter. I prefer grated apples, applesauce, or cranberries to give it that fall flavor.

Pumpkin is a great source of vitamins C and A.
Vitamin C helps build the immune system response to diseases, and vitamin A is essential for proper eye development in babies.

What to serve with BLW pumpkin pancake
Serve with a side of fruits
If you want to add to the fall flavor of pumpkins, you can serve this pancake with some fall fruits.
Some commonly available fall fruits are grapes, apples, cranberries, and passion fruits.
My kids love strawberries, so I serve the pancakes with that.
Serve with breakfast sausage or Bacon for older toddlers
If you’re making this pumpkin pancake for a toddler, then a side of meat will help balance the meal.
I like to serve it with breakfast sausage or bacon for my 2-year-old.
How to serve pumpkin pancake to babies ages 6 – 9 months old
Pumpkin pancakes can be cut into strips for babies who are 6-9 months old.
This will make it easier for them to grasp as they learn to feed themselves.
How to serve this Pumpkin pancake to babies ages 9-11 months old
Around 9-11 months, most babies should be able to grasp chunks of food with their hands.
You can help them practice this skill called the pincer grasp by serving pancakes cut into chunky squares.
How to serve this Pumpkin pancake to toddlers over 12 months old
By 12 months, babies should be able to pick up pancakes with a fork. Help them practice this skill by pre-loading a fork or guiding them to use it themselves.
Pancake Tips for picky eaters
Don’t pressure
Give your baby or toddler the chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying. It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.
Put Jam or Jelly on it
Sometimes, all a kid needs to get comfortable to try new foods is a little sweetener.
My toddler enjoys jam on things like pancakes and waffles, so I put that in his pancakes.
If you’re serving this to a baby, be aware that Jams and jellies contain some sugar, so use it sparingly.
Egg Substitute For Pancake Batter

Yields 3 pancakes
Ingredients to make the batter with premade pancake mix
- 1 cup pancake mix
- 1 cup water
- ¼ cup pumpkin purée
Ingredients to make the batter from scratch
- 1 cup flour
- ¼ cup pumpkin purée
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ cup water (for loosening the batter if it is too think)
Cooking Directions For Pumpkin Pancake for Baby
If making pancake batter with a premade mix
- combine the pumpkin purée with pancake mix
- Add the milk to loosen the batter (if it’s still too thick for your liking, add water until you reach your desired consistency). Let it rest for 3 minutes.
- Proceed with step 5 below.
If making pancakes from scratch
- Combine the dry ingredients (mix the flour, baking soda, and baking powder together)
- In a separate bowl combine your wet ingredients (mix the pumpkin purée, and egg together). Don’t mix in the milk yet.
- Combine both the wet and dry ingredients together. Wait 2 min for the pancake batter to rest.
- Now add your milk to loosen up the bather. If the batter is still too thick for your liking, feel free to add more milk or some water until you achieve your desired consistency. Rest the batter for another 3 minutes.
- Spray a pan on medium heat with cooking spray. Pour in some pancake batter and cook until there are no more bubbles forming on top.
- Flip the pancake and cook the reverse side until it’s brown enough to your liking.
- Serve and enjoy!

Storage Tips For Baby-led Weaning Pumpkin Pasta
This pumpkin pancake can be stored at room temperature for a few hours. You can also freeze the pancake for future use.
