Why I love Mango Muffins for Baby-led Weaning

I love mango muffins for baby-led weaning because it’s a great way to use up mangoes when they’re in season.

I created this recipe because we had an excess of mangoes and I wanted to try incorporating them into muffins for my baby.

My baby loved the muffins so much that I’ve now added them to his list of favorite foods. I’ll be making them every year now when mango season comes along.

Important Recipe Notes on Mango Muffins for Babies

This is a dairy-free muffin

Like most of the muffins on my website, this mango muffin is dairy-free.

I know a lot of babies and toddlers have dairy allergies so I consciously try to develop recipes that are dairy-free when possible.

If you would prefer to add milk to your muffins, just add 1 cup of any milk of your choice.

This recipe is sugar-free

I try to make my muffins sugar-free when possible. However, I know that as babies grow, they’ll begin to prefer sweeter flavors.

So if your baby requires a sweeter muffin, you can add ⅛ cup of pure maple syrup to the recipe to make it sweeter.

Do not use corn syrup or high fructose corn syrup. Those are not good for your baby.

Just note that you may have to add more flour to the recipe if using maple syrup or milk because your batter will be more liquid.

Ingredients For BLW Mango Muffins

Flour – You can choose to use whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, or a mixture of both.

My personal preference is to use a mixture of both for my recipes. Especially in recipes where I’m using mushy fruits.

Whole wheat flour is dry so it will absorb more moisture when using very wet fruits that may otherwise create a mushy muffin texture.

Baking soda and baking powder – you need those to help the muffins rise.

Mango – you can use any type of mango you prefer. Whichever you choose, make sure that they’re completely ripe before using.

Since we’re not using sugar, the mango’s sweetness is what we’re relying on to make the muffins taste sweet. So the riper the mango, the sweeter the muffins.

Eggs – you’ll need eggs for this recipe to work. It’s possible to use an egg substitute but I’ve never tried to. We need eggs to help bind the ingredients together.

Oil – I used canola oil for my recipe. You can use whatever type of oil you prefer. Dairy-free muffins require oil to give them moisture so they’re not dry.

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.
