Important Recipe Notes on BLW Baked Oatmeal Bar
There are eggs in this recipe
I know that some babies have an egg allergy so I just wanted to let you know that this recipe uses eggs.
Eggs act as a binding agent that’s why I use it. You can try using other egg substitutes as well. See the table below for some egg substitutes.
Although I must say, I’ve never personally used an egg substitute for this baked oatmeal bar for baby.
Egg Substitutes | Number of “eggs” Made |
---|---|
3 tbsp peanut butter | 1 egg |
1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water | 1 egg (whisk until gelatinous) |
1/2 mashed banana | 1 egg |
1 tbsp mashed sweet potato | 1 egg |
1/4 cup applesauce | 1 egg |
1 tbsp chia seed + 3 tbsp water | 1 egg (stir & rest it for 15-30 min) |
1 tbsp soy protein + 3 tbsp water | 1 egg (mix & use immediately) |
You can use any other fruit of your choice
I prefer making apple cinnamon-baked oatmeal bars for babies. As I mentioned before, it reminds me of fall.
In the past, I’ve made oatmeal bars using blueberries and strawberries instead of apples. You can use any fruit of your choice.
This recipe has dairy
This recipe also uses milk to help soften up the oatmeal. So if your baby has a milk allergy or intolerance, you may want to use an alternative.
You can use almond milk or other milk alternatives. You can also use water in place of milk. Although It won’t taste as good with water.
Why Oatmeal Is Good For Babies and Toddlers
Oatmeal contains many essential nutrients that babies need to grow.
Oats contain important minerals like manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and folate. They also contain important B vitamins like B1, B5, and B6. These all help develop the brain, bones, and body (source).

Tips for Picky Eaters
Don’t pressure
Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.
It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.
Make it into a game
Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.
A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.
Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.
Ingredients For BLW Apple Cinnamon Baked Oat Bar
- ¼ cup maple syrup (optional)
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 cups oats
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 3 tsp cinnamon
- 1 medium apple (diced)
- 1 tsp nutmeg (optional)
Apple – Any apple will do for this recipe, but I prefer the sweeter kinds like red delicious and honey crisps.
Oats – I used rolled oats for this recipe. You could also use instant oats as well. I blended 1/4 cup of the oats into powdered form. This will allow the oatmeal to mix better with the rest of the ingredients when baking.
Maple Syrup – Maple syrup is an important sweetener in this BLW baked oatmeal bar. You don’t need to sweeten the oatmeal bar if your baby is very young, but I find that older babies prefer to eat this recipe when it’s a little sweeter. So in place of using refined sugar, I use real maple syrup.
Eggs – eggs are required to help the oats bind together. Without it, the oatmeal won’t stick together to form a “bar”.
Milk – Milk helps to soften the oatmeal for baking. Oats need to soak up some liquid in order for them to bake properly. You could use water in place of milk but I’ve never tried it. You can also use a milk alternative like oat milk as well.
Spices – I used cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg for my spices. I find that the combination of all three produces the most aromatic flavor in oatmeal.
