My latest recipe is sweet potato muffins for baby and toddlers.

This is one of my fluffiest muffins to date. The best part is that it these baby muffins are dairy-free

This BLW sweet potato muffin only requires 3 major ingredients to make it.

It’s packed with nutrients and my whole family enjoyed eating it.

Why I Love This Sweet Potato Muffins for Baby

The other day I was gifted a bag of sweet potatoes.

I knew I could make things like sweet potato mash, sweet potato purée, or the usual sweet potato fries.

But I wanted to challenge myself and make something out of my comfort zone. So I decided to make sweet potato muffins for baby and toddler.

At first, I didn’t think it would come out well because of how gooey mashed sweet potatoes could be.

But I decided to try it, and I’m so glad I did. The gooey nature of the sweet potatoes actually made this muffin more fluffy.

Even without using milk for the ingredients, these muffins still retain their fluffiness

Important Recipe Notes on BLW Sweet Potato Muffins

You can choose to cook or grate the sweet potato

To make these sweet potato muffins for baby, I decided to steam and mash them first.

If you have the time, I would suggest you bake them first because it’ll give the sweet potatoes more flavor.

Bananas are optional

I added bananas to these baby-led weaning sweet potato muffins to increase the sweetness.

You can choose to add some maple syrup instead if your baby or toddler prefers it a little sweeter.

If you don’t want bananas or maple syrup, then just stick with sweet potatoes only.

If you like bananas, then you can add them to this recipe to make sweet potato banana muffins. You can keep it dairy-free by omitting the milk and using oil only.

Sweet potato apple muffins

Apples and sweet potatoes would make the best combination of fruits for this type of muffin. Check out my apple carrot muffins here.

The sweetness of the apples would complement the sweet potatoes very well.

You may have to adjust the flour amount to compensate for how wet grated apples can be.

You can also make this recipe variation dairy-free for your baby by skipping milk and following my recipe.

How to serve sweet potato muffins to babies and toddlers

6 – 9 months old

You can cut the muffin in half for your baby who’s between 6-9 months old. At this age, larger pieces of food are easier to hold.

10-12 months old

Once your baby is between 10-12 months, their grasp would have improved. You can begin serving muffins in small pieces.

12 months plus

Toddlers older than 12 months can have a whole muffin. There’s no need to cut the muffins any longer.

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.

  • 1 cup of oil

Storage Tips for Baby-led Weaning Sweet Potato Muffins

You can store these baby-led weaning sweet potato muffins in the fridge for up to a week.

The longer you keep them the less fresh they’ll taste. Because these muffins are made from cooked sweet potatoes, they retain a lot of moisture.

They’ll get soggy if frozen or left in the fridge for too long.
