Why I Love Banana Oat Pancakes for Baby-led Weaning

Banana oat pancake is a perfect baby-led weaning breakfast recipe. It’s so good for kids for many reasons.

You don’t need flour to make it, so it’s extra healthy for kids. All you need are rolled oats. For this recipe, I used rolled oats from Quaker Oats.

Oat pancakes are also naturally sweet because they don’t contain any sugar. The banana and peanut butter acts as a natural sweetener.

I created this recipe because I was looking for an alternative to the oatmeal with fruits I usually make on Wednesdays.

I wanted my kids to try oats in a variety of different recipes. That’s why I created this oatmeal finger recipe, and oat muffins as well.

Important Recipe Notes

This oat pancake recipe doesn’t use flour

This Banana oat pancake recipe doesn’t use any flour. The pancake batter is made by blending the oats into a smooth paste.

I used nut butter for the recipe to make it taste sweeter

Another important thing to note about this recipe is that it contains nut butter, which I used as a sweetener. You can skip the nut butter altogether and just use apple sauce.

I used peanut butter in this recipe but you can use any nut butter of your choice if you choose to add it on.

No sugar added

This recipe doesn’t contain any sugar because babies under 1 should not be given sugar.

Egg substitutes

Use one of the egg substitutes in the table below to make this oat pancake. It’ll help bind the oats together to make a delicious pancake.

Egg SubstitutesNumber of “eggs” Made
3 tbsp peanut butter1 egg
1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water1 egg (whisk until gelatinous)
1/2 mashed banana1 egg
1 tbsp mashed sweet potato1 egg
1/4 cup applesauce1 egg
1 tbsp chia seed + 3 tbsp water1 egg (stir & rest it for 15-30 min)
1 tbsp soy protein + 3 tbsp water1 egg (mix & use immediately)

Skip the peanut butter altogether

The peanut butter added to this banana oat pancake was done to help thicken the oats a bit and provide sweetness.

Blended oats don’t make as thick a pancake batter without nut butter, but this doesn’t mean it’s necessary to add it. I just like my batter thicker than most.

If you want to make this oat pancake, you can skip the nut butter and it’ll still come out great.

To serve this oat pancake to babies ages 6-9 months old, cut them into strips. This will make it easier for your baby to hold and feed themselves.

At this age, most babies still have what is called the palmar grasp. Which means they’re most comfortable holding things that fit into their palms.
