The Best Cauliflower Pizza Crust For Baby & Toddlers (So Easy & Delicious)

One secret to getting my kids to eat their vegetables is to add them to their favorite foods.

So think of pizza, muffins, oatmeal, and pancakes.

Cauliflower pizza crust for baby and toddlers was created to get my kids to eat their vegetables.

So I created a recipe where I use cauliflower to make the pizza dough, and my kids loved it so much.

They couldn’t even tell the difference between the cauliflower pizza crust and a regular pizza crust

Important Recipe Notes on BLW Cauliflower Pizza Crust

Anyone who has attempted to make cauliflower pizza dough will tell you how soggy it can be.

It’s not like regular flour-based pizza dough.

The cauliflower tends to absorb a lot of water because you have to steam or cook it beforehand.

You can’t use raw cauliflower. I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work. So I came up with a creative way to make the recipe work.

See below for my success tips on making your baby-led weaning cauliflower pizza.

Tip for Success With This Recipe

Consider adding some almond flour to your cauliflower pizza dough

The most effective way to avoid a soggy cauliflower pizza crust is to add almond flour to the cauliflower dough.

Make sure you follow my exact measurements because too much almond flour and your dough will be very hard.

You could also get away with adding some coconut flour as well. Although I haven’t done so myself.

But I’ve used coconut flour in other recipes to help absorb excess moisture.

Use a food processor, not a blender

One big mistake I’ve seen people make in the past is using a blender for this recipe.

To make cauliflower pizza for baby, you need to break the cooked cauliflower into crumbs.

It should be the texture of cauliflower rice or breadcrumbs consistency.

This can only be done in a food processor. A Blender will turn your cauliflower into a purée.

That’s not what we’re looking for here.

I suggest this food processor from Amazon if you don’t have one. Ours have lasted us over 10 years now.

You must squeeze out all the water from your cauliflower first

To make sure your cauliflower pizza dough is firm, you need to squeeze out as much water as possible from it.

You should only do this after breaking down the cauliflower into cauliflower rice consistency.

My preferred method of doing this is with a cheesecloth like this one.

You can also use a clean dish towel for this. That’s what I did in this recipe.

If you don’t squeeze out enough water

Bake both sides of the pizza crust before adding your toppings

This is another important tip for success.

To ensure that all the water evaporates from the cauliflower pizza crust, bake both sides in the oven.

I first bake one side, then flip it and bake the reverse before I add any topping of my choice.

Bake the pizza on parchment paper for easy flipping

You’ll find that it’s a little hard to flip this pizza crust. So to make things easier for myself, I cook the BLW cauliflower pizza on parchment paper.

When the time comes to flip it, it’s easy to slip the spatula underneath and flip it easily.

Don’t add too much pizza sauce

Pizza sauce makes your cauliflower pizza for baby more soggy.

To avoid a soggy pizza dough, I suggest using a small amount of pizza sauce. Use just enough to moisten the dough without layering it on.

Don’t use soggy toppings

To avoid adding to the moisture of your BLW cauliflower pizza, try to avoid a soggy topping.

Some soggy toppings to avoid include zucchini, spinach, bell peppers, tomatoes, etc.

Anything that will ooze liquid when cooked should not be used to avoid a soggy dough.

If possible, sautee your toppings beforehand

If you must use a soggy topping like tomato, mushrooms, zucchini, etc, then sauté them beforehand.

Sautéing the vegetables beforehand will help remove some of the moisture so that it doesn’t soak into the cauliflower pizza dough.

Why I Love Cauliflower Pizza For Baby-led Weaning

I love making this cauliflower pizza for baby because of all the nutrients it contains.

To make the pizza crust, I use one large head of cauliflower.

That means my kids are getting a large amount of veggies in our slice of their pizza.

I don’t know about you but I think that’s pretty cool.

Why Cauliflower Is Good For Babies and Toddlers

Cauliflower contains many nutrients that babies and toddlers need to grow.

Cauliflower contains vitamins C, K, and folate. Folate is known for promoting brain development in babies and toddlers.

In addition to these vitamins, cauliflower also contains protein, carbohydrates, and fiber, which helps babies maintain regular bowel function (source)

What To Serve With Cauliflower Pizza For Baby-led Weaning

Serve it with some protein

Baby-led weaning cauliflower pizza already has a ton of vegetables in it. So if you want to make it a more balanced diet, you can add protein.

Some good proteins for babies include beans, chickpeas, shredded pork, chicken, and tofu.

Serve it with fruits

You can add some fruits on the side of your cauliflower pizza for baby.

Fruits will help balance out the cheese and tomato flavor.

How to serve Cauliflower Pizza For Baby

6-8 Months old

You can serve the pizza crust to babies who are 6-8 months old. They will be able to practice chewing by gnawing at the crust until it softens.

Some babies this age are able to swallow the softened crust. Others will just spit it out.

9-12 months old

Between 9-12 months, cauliflower pizza can be served in bite-sized chunks for your baby. They will be able to pick it up with their pincer grasp to feed themselves.

Make sure you remove any hard pizza topping that can pose a choking hazard.

That means no seeds, nuts, or chunky pieces of meat.

12- 24 months and older

Around 12-24 months, toddlers will be comfortable eating a whole slice of pizza.

Always supervise your baby during meals in case of choking incidents.

Tips for Picky Eaters

Don’t pressure

Give your baby or toddler a chance to say no. It’s okay if they don’t like what we serve them. Keep trying.

It takes at least 30 exposures for a baby to begin liking a food, so don’t give up.

Make it into a game

Sometimes I create games around the food I serve to get my kids interested in eating.

A game we’ve played in the past is called “Here comes the airplane… open the garage”. This encourages them to open their mouth as I bring the food in like an airplane.

Sometimes my kids will try new foods this way.

Ingredients For Cauliflower Pizza For Baby

Cauliflower

You can’t make cauliflower pizza for a baby without the main ingredient. I used a medium-sized cauliflower for this recipe.

If you don’t want to make one large cauliflower pizza crust, then just make small personal pizzas instead.

This recipe should be enough to make 2 small personal pizzas.

You can then wrap the cauliflower pizza crust in cling wrap and freeze it for later use.

Egg

The egg acts as a binding agent to make the pizza dough stick together.

Parmesan cheese

It would be best if you used freshly grated Parmesan cheese for this recipe. Dried Parmesan cheese will not hold the dough together. It also doesn’t taste as good.

Almond flour

Almond flour is optional but highly recommended. I’ve made this recipe in the past without adding it.

I can honestly say that the pizza dough with the almond flour added was less wet than the one without the almond flour added.

Seasoning

You can use any seasoning of your choice in the amount you prefer.

As for me, I prefer to use garlic powder, onion powder, Italian seasoning, and black pepper to make pizza dough.

They really help to elevate the flavor.

FAQs About Cauliflower Pizza for Baby-led Weaning

Why is my BLW Cauliflower Pizza Soggy?

If you find that your Cauliflower Pizza crust is soggy, then you’ve probably made two common mistakes.

The first is not squeezing out all the water in the cauliflower before making the dough.

The second is adding too many toppings or adding wet toppings like sliced tomatoes, squash, etc.

Why does cauliflower pizza have so many calories?

The calories in cauliflower pizza come from the amount of toppings added, as well as the calories from the cheese mixed in. Some cauliflower pizza crust also has other ingredients like almond flour which contains carbs as well.

Is Cauliflower Pizza really good for kids?

According to data from the USDA, one head of cauliflower contains tons of vitamin C, Vitamin B6, magnesium, iron, calcium, protein, potassium, carbohydrates, and fiber.

That’s how much nutrients your kid is getting from eating one cauliflower pizza. So I’d say it’s pretty good for kids.
